Texts about witchcraft were published by Christian scholars, and portrayed the craft as devil worship or demonic possession. While there were no doubt hereditary witches who quietly practiced the old ways, there was little said publicly about witchcraft in Great Britain and Europe until the beginning of the twentieth century -perhaps because of the grim historical records of the Inquisition and its terrible trials for heresy and witchcraft that tormented the collective unconscious of the religiously minded.

In other words, rather than one great book of Wiccan beliefs, an ancient Book of Shadows dogmatically outlining creeds and ecclesiasticisms, there are many books by many men and women who carefully explain the belief structures, rites, and rituals of their particular expression of the craft.

Athough there is the sometimes fiery debate as to the true historical roots of the faith, most Wiccans believe that none of them can dictate to any other just exactly what it is that they must believe. She died in 1982, at the age of 65, but her name was still spread until every pagan household had learnt it.Those who follow the Wiccan path are a diverse group of individualists who pride themselves on being members of a religious philosophy that is flexible and adaptive to the needs of contemporary society. Some of her most popular books include 'The Diary of a Witch', 'The Complete Art of Witchcraft', and 'Sybil Leeks Book of Curses'. She didn't fail to spread publicity, and gained countless interviews and radio shows. She explained that Wicca was not Satanist, and 'Black Magick' (although she did believe in cursing) and all of those rumours we've all heard about Witchcraft. She was very popular in America also, and continued to spread Wicca even in her time there. When she moved to America, she was much interested in Astrology. She gained a lot of media press, and was labeled 'Britain's Most Popular Witch', when she had a mediumistic experience involving seeing an angry spirit throwing a large table across the room, and many other paranormal experiences, but when her landlord didn't let her renew her apartment lease and suggested she should move to America, she didn't decline to do so. She was in the New Forest coven with Gardner during her time in England.

She claimed to be a Hereditary Witch from Molly Leigh, a witch executed during the historic Witch-Hunts, not requiring initiation. Sybil Leek, born in 1917 and dead 1982, was another important Wiccan from the past.
